Internship
Founded in 1972 as a model for non-profit, community healthcare clinics, our facility has two main areas of activity. We offer low cost reproductive healthcare in our medical clinic, and psychotherapy to individuals, couples, adolescents and families in our adjacent counseling offices.
Our clients seek counseling for a variety of life challenges, and represent a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Some want help with relationship, occupational, and phase-of-life issues, while others seek help in working through depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and addictions.
The counseling center offers a unique opportunity for interns and trainees who have completed, or are in the process of completing master’s level degrees in Psychology. Our program is geared toward self starters; we are structured to simulate a private practice setting where the trainee/intern will have the opportunity to be involved in initial intake, fee-setting, collection, scheduling, and maintenance of clinical records. The work our interns and trainees do is driven by their interests, inspired by their specific goals for themselves as therapists, and carried out in a nurturing environment with the support of skilled and attentive supervision.
We look for people whose backgrounds and experience have prepared them to assume a fairly independent professional role. We value maturity, self-awareness, a sense of curiosity, and a deep desire to develop professionally and grow personally. Accordingly, we strongly encourage interns and trainees to participate in their own ongoing psychotherapy.
Interns and trainees make a commitment of 17 hours a week for a period of at least one year. This includes a minimum caseload of 8 client hours per week, individual and group supervision, training sessions, and conducting intakes. Because a portion of these hours must be scheduled on weekdays during the day, our program is not a good fit for those with conflicting full-time work commitments.
The internship experience and supervised clinical hours received at Women’s Clinic & Family Counseling Center are accepted by the Board of Behavioral Sciences toward meeting requirements for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist. The theoretical orientations of our supervisors embrace the most relevant teachings from psychodynamic/object relations, Jungian, humanistic/existential, cognitive-behavioral, narrative/post-modern, and expressive art therapy.
